I am starting off my 13th year of teaching amazing little first graders. The students are all very diverse this year and come from many different backgrounds, religions and home lives. Their experiences at home vary, but they are all so excited to come to school every day and learn. For some it's the only constant they have in their lives.
School gives them the routine, structure and experiences that they may not have or get at home.
Regardless of what home is like, when my students come into the classroom they know they are welcomed and respected. They are encouraged to do their best in everything they do and put their best foot forward every day. They try so hard to achieve and please and seeing the smile on their faces, puts a smile on mine!
When looking at my classroom and my students' needs every year I started paying attention to how much they love to play games! However, when looking at the materials that I had for math specifically, I realized I didn't have many games they could play while still learning essential skills such as addition, subtraction and number sense.
At the beginning of the year, most of my students struggle with number sense and I started thinking about how much they love to play games and I wanted to connect their number sense and fact learning to something I know they already enjoy so much!
I would love a wide variety of games because every learner is so different and I want to be able to differentiate the game playing to match each child's needs and make it exciting regardless of their level. Some of the games that I am hoping to receive are: Snap It Up!, Even Steven's Odd, Kanoodle, Super Genius and Ideal 4-Way Countdown. All of these games work on building number sense and becoming faster at mental math in both addition and subtraction. This is the area that my students struggle with and I want to find a way to excite them that they see as fun!
