There are many opportunities to utilize educational games in a classroom: during center time, indoor recess (with our New England weather- this is frequent), reading group time, with substitute teachers, etc... These games greatly support the concepts that students are learning!
I teach in a wonderful community school that is thriving with love and culture.
Students come from all over the world, speaking an array of languages. We have a wonderful, gifted staff that regularly goes above and beyond to meet each child's social, emotional, physical and educational needs. Our school is located in an area consisting of mainly apartment buildings. There is a high transition rate, as families often have to move for various reasons. We have many students who are learning to speak English as a second language. Students are eager and enthusiastic to learn!
My Project
Every day, while I am working with reading groups, my students have center time. During this time, they are busy bees, participating in a variety of educational centers. If you were to walk into my classroom at this time, you would see an array of workers and explorers. Some will be reading on their own, some reading to a classmate. Students will be writing stories, completing various assignments/activities, and playing educational games. The games that I have selected for this project align with the concepts that we are teaching throughout second grade. As students learn at their own individual pace, these games work to support all learners.
These games can be used during other important times. They will be beneficial during indoor recesses, as we have many of those during the Winter and Spring. They will also be suitable for times when I am at meetings/workshops and students have a substitute teacher. Games are helpful for parent meetings, when children come too!
By providing educational opportunities through games, students are able to associate learning with positive experiences.
Often times, we teach certain concepts and move on, not practicing the former concepts consistently. These educational games are an excellent way to help students maintain knowledge!
