I am a third grade teacher in a Title I school in the South Bronx. I have been working on sportsmanship with my students all year long. Whenever we play a class game or contest I am always telling them how important it is to be a good winner and not a sore loser. Most of the children don't know how to play old fashioned board games. When I was their age I played checkers, scrabble and other board games. I had a lot of experience with winning and losing, so I knew how to react to both. Most of the children in my class don't play games on a regular basis so they really aren't taught sportsmanship. Our class doesn't have gym and most have never played baseball, basketball or other organized sports. I would like to buy some basic board games, and educational games to help teach my students what it means to play fair and to be a good loser or winner. My third graders are in a generation raised on x-box and playstation. This has caused them to lose this important social skill that my generation has taken for granted. The video games are played solo so much of the time, they don't know how to properly relate to their peers in a simple game of checkers or scrabble. Games will help them learn to play cooperatively, as well as practice problem solving, build logical thinking skills, and increase math and word skills. I would greatly appreciate being given funds to purchase a few basic games that my students can play in groups while I circulate to help reinforce my sportsmanship lessons. This will help my 22 third graders this year and those in future years.
