Our school is located in a diverse, urban community in Maine.
We are unique!
Our school is the first teacher-led and governed school in our state. Our student body comes from a multitude of backgrounds; over twenty-two nations are represented, with twenty-nine languages spoken. Over 52% of our students come from homes where English is a second language.
Our Kindergarten class is made up of 17 amazing 5- and 6- year old children who are so enthusiastic to come to school every day. Only about 25% of the students in the class have had prior schooling/preschool and more than half come from households where English is not their native language. We are a lively, diverse group, both in our backgrounds and our abilities. We need to be excited about the books and learning materials we are using. It is so important for students to be able to relate to and see themselves in the characters in the books they read and the toys and games they are learning with at school. We want to build confident and kind students and turn them into giving and accepting members of society.
My Project
We are in need of engaging literacy games that focus on phonics and phonemic awareness! With these materials, students will have so much fun learning and engage students in their learning through games, puzzles, fun small group activities and hands-on center activities. These activities focus on letters and letter sounds, beginning sounds, rhyming, high frequency words, and early reading skills. As of right now, I am currently creating these activities myself and would love to be able to have a nice library of ready-to-go activities to pull from. Students love to play games and have highly engaging materials to work with. I am super excited to also receive a sensory table to incorporate into our learning environment.
