I have the honor to work with about 22 of the coolest first graders in OK. My homebase has 22 students, however, our school is open concept. Therefore, I get to work with two other teachers and their students as well. As with most classrooms, our first graders have a wide range of abilities and interests.
My students are enthusiastic, curious and eager to learn new ideas.
Whole group, small group or partner activities and projects help build a sense of community within the classroom. This creates an environment that inspires our students to think outside the box, try something new and be open to other ideas. We are always looking for new, creative ways to get our students excited about learning while integrating all core subjects into our projects and daily learning.
My Project
The use of games and manipulative materials is a daily occurrence in my first grade classroom. The materials chosen address each area we concentrate on in first grade. From phonics to comprehension, these learning activities will provide meaningful practice in reading and writing.
While learning to read and write can be intimidating to some children, collaborative games and sensory activities, create a more relaxed and engaging way for students to practice the necessary skills to be successful in reading.
Students learn best through multiple sensory activities that allow for practice in both reading and writing skills. Using the Gel Writing Boards will provide another sensory option when practicing these skills. The Blank Phonics Stamp Set provides practice of putting sounds together to create words.
Games help students practice these skills with their peers. The Roll-and-Write Word Game, Twist Turn 4 Letter Word Builders and Simple Words Learning Locks, will provide a fun way to reinforce letter sound knowledge and blending of these sounds to create words.
Another component of reading is comprehension. The Story Wands and Reading Comprehension Quiz Cards will help my students build strong comprehension skills. This is particularly important as they progress as readers and begin reading more for enjoyment or for research purposes.
Your support in this project will help my students be fully engaged in learning to read. We all know you learn best by doing. These games and manipulative materials allow for active practice to help reinforce what is being taught both in large and small group.
