I am a reading interventionist at my neighborhood middle school. I work with (amazing!) 6th, 7th, and 8th-grade students from a variety of family structures and different racial, socioeconomic, and religious backgrounds. In our classroom, we not only work to develop strong foundational reading skills (like phonics and reading comprehension), but also a desire to read for pleasure. Our focus is always on growth of students’ skills and confidence! My classroom is a place where taking risks is an important part of learning.
Students trust one another and support one another; we are like a little family!
Celebrations, big and small, are regularly part of our classroom!
My Project
Donations to this project will help provide a variety of board games for my classroom. Playing board games might not be something every student has the opportunity to participate in due to schedules at home, limited resources, or the love of technology. In the final days before a break from school, I want to provide all my students with time to “unplug,” play board games, celebrate, smile and laugh--together!
Game Day will allow students to connect with classmates in a different way!
Playing games is fun and helps build community.
Research shows there are many benefits from playing board games like teamwork, good sportsmanship, and problem solving skills, and the list goes on. Playing games helps to strengthen memory, patience, communication skills, concentration, logical reasoning and cooperation.
Games also helps develop the frontal lobe of the brain and promotes the development of executive functioning, organization, and decision-making skills. This is all secondary of course, to how students feel when they are successfully part of a group and making middle school memories!
