Many students have a bad taste towards math before even entering my classroom. My goal is to make them realize how much fun it can be.
My students are 7th graders in a suburban community in the South Carolina Lowcountry.
Our school is located in a low-income area with a high population of students who receive free and reduced-price lunch.
Asking students to bring in supplies for projects or school activities can be a struggle since many students do not have the means for even basic necessities. And creating an environment where students feel welcome is important.
My Project
Every Friday we play math games in my class to help students build number sense, recall basic math facts, and problem solve, all while having fun. If I have a variety of games available for my students, it will keep them engaged and allow them to work on different skills each week without realizing it.
Middle school students often do not enjoy math and automatically think they are bad at it.
By building their math skills with game play, the students are able to have fun while becoming better at math. They begin to see patterns and learn more about math without even realizing it.
