I work with newcomer students who come to live in San Francisco from other countries. Many students do not know English when they come here and many of the students are refugees. They come to our school with no knowledge of their new city or new language. We not only teach them high school content and the English language, but we also teach them how to use technology for education, how to navigate the new city (and country) that they live in, and how to succeed in future careers in America.
Students at Galileo Academy are passionate and cultured; they are looking for a world-view experience that will allow them to learn more about the new country they live in.
This World Strides educational field trip would be a perfect way for the newcomer students (and all Galileo students) to learn more about America.
My Project
Galileo Academy’s student club, the Galileo Navigators, is going on an educational and historical field trip to Washington DC and New York with World Strides, an accredited and recognized program. We are going to visit our country’s capital, sites, major attractions, memorials, and museums as well as learn about America’s history and culture. We will be experiencing hands-on learning as we explore the east coast. Our students here at Galileo are often newcomers, minorities, or from low-income families. Our students are currently fundraising individually and as a group via car washes, direct sales, and community events so that the Galileo Navigators can afford the entire trip. We would like to be able to completely fund the trip so that students can stop focusing on the fundraising part of this trip and begin focusing on the more important parts of this trip: completing pre-trip activities and lessons, planning and preparing for the field trip, community building.
The objective of this field trip is to give students the opportunity to experience America as never before, learn the history and culture of our country, as well as meet new people and network with students from around the world which is important for students’ social and cultural development.
This field trip with World Strides will expose students to new places that can change student lives as well as give them a once-in-a-lifetime experience. Interactive learning activities are embedding into each tour, so students will be continuously involved in learning: during museum trips, memorial trips, day trips, and even in transit. Students have the opportunity to receive credits and teachers receive professional development during the trip. In addition to this, our club, the Galileo Navigators, is developing a day-by-day field trip plan, specific activities and itinerary for the trip, and pre- & post-trip community building.
