My Students

Plate tectonics and continental drift are concepts we have all heard about. Did you know they have literally shaped the world in which we live? I want my 75 science students to understand the driving mechanisms behind these ideas.

Our school is located in Ammonal on the windward side of the island of Oahu, in the state of Hawaii.

The per capita income for the town is $16,089 and nearly 50% of the population is Hawaiian or Pacific Islander. About 75% of students are eligible for free or reduced-price lunch. The student population is about 92% Hawaiian or Pacific Islander.

My Project

Even though my students watch videos and then draw the continental plates, they always have trouble with the concept of plate tectonics. If we have the 3D model, my students will be able to touch, hold, and feel plate tectonics. They will re-enact the formation of our continents and continue the movement to see the world of the future. They will see volcanoes, earthquakes, and sea floor spread -- all things that affect us here at home in Hawaii. I am striving for more than their understanding; I want them to be excited and make it personal. Please help these students!
