Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Iconic UCLA basketball coach John Wooden once said, "If you don't have time to do it right, when will you have time to do it over?" This year's AP Physics C class faces the challenge of learning the same amount of material as last year's class - but in about half the time.
Simply put, our AP Physics C students represent the best and brightest hope for our country's technological presence in the world.
Every year these students complete this rigorous course prepared to matriculate to the finest engineering and science schools in the United States. They are hard-working, intelligent, and dedicated. However, this year's group faces the difficult task of learning the vast amount of material needed to do well on the AP test in much less time than was available to previous classes. I truly believe that my AP Physics C students are up to this challenge.
My Project
I'm requesting two Vernier tracks, with cars, pulleys and photogates. These tracks are versatile and can be used for several different labs. In particular, I'd like to use them to create a new lab on momentum and collisions. We already have two of these wonderful tracks, but with 61 students in two classes, it would take several days to give each group a chance to obtain their own data. With the decrease in class time, that's just not feasible. I could demonstrate the lab and give the kids the data. However, it's one thing to study these phenomena on paper with equations; it's quite another to actually crash cars into each other and to be able to measure the change in momenta to the ten thousandth place. I truly believe that the hands-on experience that the AP student gain during lab work goes a long way towards the success they achieve on the AP test. Furthermore, it's like I often say, "Physics without the Fun is just Math class!
Our AP scores are garnering attention throughout the county and state.
Our commitment to lab work and experimentation represents the backbone of all that we do in AP Physics C. The materials that you're helping us buy will NOT gather dust on a shelf. It will be used by class after class of students, and will stand as a testament to your generosity and belief that kids who are doing great work should be rewarded for it. Thank you!
