My Students

My students are from rural and suburban areas. They come from diverse socioeconomic, racial, and religious backgrounds.

Reading is of vital importance to my school culture, and my students enjoy having access to a wide variety of books, both for information and entertainment.

My students love to visit the school library frequently, and many of them live miles away from a branch of the local public library. For some, the school library is the only library they ever visit. Additionally, some students' only access to books at all are those they check out from the school library.

My Project

Comic books and graphic novels are checked out more than any other materials in the school library. We have a decent-sized collection, but fifty more books are needed to meet student demand. Students can currently only check out one comic book/graphic novel at a time. With more materials, I can allow students to select more of these books.

Graphic novels are wonderful, accessible resources for both avid and reluctant readers.

These materials are visually stimulating and combine pictures and words to give an overview of the story. The stories are fast-paced and considered "easy reads," but they still manage to introduce readers to higher level vocabulary.
