This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Our first-grade students are from a Title I school. The area immediately surrounding our school is low income and high poverty, with limited outside resources. Our students face struggles inside and outside of school each day. My students have come from many different places, from many different and often difficult situations.

Our students arrive at school at 7:30 am to get free breakfast before starting their rigorous day.

We take pride in our first-grade students wanting to learn new things and embrace each day, despite their everyday struggles.

My Project

The 1st graders at Rogers Garden Elementary have partnered with the Van Wezel to complete an in-depth exploration of drama and reading connected to performances at the Van Wezel that they will see throughout the school year. Our school is a diversely populated, low income elementary school in Manatee County Florida. This endeavor, which utilizes a 3-prong approach (teachers, students, parents) was designed to engage young readers and get them and their families, excited about reading. The project includes: a teacher workshop which is teaches arts integration strategies connected to the performance, the 1st graders attending the performance of "The Gruffalo," the 1st graders participating in teaching artist led workshops in their classrooms and a family literacy night which includes dinner, a a workshop and a copy of "The Gruffalo," so that they can read the story at home.
