Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students need motivation to write. The pencils I chose for their writing include positive comments to remind them that they are terrific. Help us become better writers by allowing us to have pencils, paper, and a pencil sharpener!
My students are from Texas.
Most of them are English Second Learners and all of them attend a low, SES, public school. They are all super sweet, hardworking students who sometimes come to school lacking supplies. They are creatively gifted kids who, of course, need a nudge every now and then to get to work. This year, they have been learning the difference between narrative and expository writing. Most of them have the ability to beautifully improve their narrative writing through the use of sensory language.
My Project
Having pencils, paper, and a pencil sharpener will immensely improve their everyday school experience. We practice our writing every single day and these items are required. There have been times where my students have had to use half sheets because they tore off a piece to share with their neighbors. Every time I bring in a new sharpener and paper, they are very grateful and take care of our classroom supplies. Nonetheless, paper runs out, pencils eventually need to be replaced, and our electric sharpeners stop working. Having these resources readily available will help improve their writing skills which is necessary for their everyday life. Writing narratives allows them to tell their stories in a detailed, well-thought out manner.
This request will definitely impact my students.
Through writer's workshop, my students are learning the essentials of writing such as correct subject verb agreement, capitalization, punctuation, compound sentences, the importance of sensory words, and organizing your paragraphs using transitions. These are skills that they will carry out for the rest of their educational career. Apart from the grammatical aspect, they will also learn how to properly convey their thoughts and tell stories.
