My students need flexible seating options in our classroom to increase their engagement, their choice, and ultimately, their learning. I would like for my students to have a variety of comfortable options to relax and learn!
I am privileged to work with 25 of the most amazing students who come together to create a family. My school is a Title I school, and every child qualifies for free lunch and breakfast! Many of my students come from tribes all over South Dakota. A vast majority of my students live in poverty. Most come from broken homes with less than excellent living conditions. Many enjoy coming to school because it is a safe and comfortable place, often times because their home is not. School may be the only place where they get meals and adults who truly care about their well-being and education.
Despite these obstacles, these kids work hard to break the cycle of poverty.
They value education, social and cultural differences, and want to make the world a better place. They strive to meet and exceed academic goals. With the world at their fingertips, they will have the power to be a light in this world.
My Project
Flexible seating is a big movement in today's education. We are teaching students more than just academic standards--we are teaching them 21st century skills they need to help them succeed in our demanding, ever-changing world.
Research shows that classrooms that are designed to support the variety of learners and young people often have increased student engagement, which translates into increased student growth.
By giving students a choice in finding a spot where they learn best, they feel empowered to take ownership of their learning.
I have chosen several flexible seating options including stools and balance balls, that will meet the needs of my 25 kids and students in years to come. These options let students have the opportunity to learn in a 21st century classroom, where they can relax and learn every day. The flexible seating options that I chose will allow students to incorporate movement into their day, improving their health and their focus. Flexible seating offers students the chance to be active in the classroom setting. These options will improve their every day education!
