This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
For almost all of my students, Pre-K is their very first experience in a school, and I am their first teacher. I want my students to develop a deep love of learning. My school serves almost all low-income students, with many students speaking English as their second language.
I believe it is my duty as a teacher to help close the achievement gap.
One of the ways to do that is to make school a fun and inviting place. However, this requires resources that go beyond my teacher's income. I love my scholars, and they deserve the very best!
My Project
I just finished taking a professional development class on mathematical thinking and the importance of a curriculum centered around STEM (science, technology , engineering, and mathematics). In the class, we read read numerous articles explaining how extremely critical guided instruction using "simple" materials, such as wooden blocks, are so important.
My students need high quality wooden blocks and manipulatives to kick start their passion for math and STEM!
The materials I chose for my project include wooden blocks, wooden stackers, number popsicles, and sorting tubes to help foster a natural math environment. Children need hands on materials to develop spatial awareness, which promotes a strong foundation in STEM.
