Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Southridge Senior High is the name of the school I teach at. This High School is located in Miami, Florida. The school has a total student population of nineteen hundred and sixty-eight students ranging in grades nine through twelve. The student demographics consists of nine hundred females and one thousand sixty males. Hispanics are (52.2%), Blacks are (41.4%), Whites are (4.7%), Asian are (6%), Islanders (1%), Indian (4%), Multi-cultured (6%). We are categorized as a Title One school with 84.1% free or reduced price lunch. The area surrounding the school is a mix of low-income families and government housing. The neighborhood close to the school has a violent reputation with crimes being committed and drug use. Many of our students are homeless or in foster care. Our neighborhood was affected negatively by Hurricane Irma. Families had to seek refuge in nearby shelters including this school. I am looking to receive funding for my performing arts students so that they can gain self esteem and confidence. We are in need of dance shoes and a Dell computer with editing programs.
My Project
The impact of Hurricane Irma affected many of the families at my school. Parents are struggling to make repairs to their homes while still providing everyday essentials for their families. My students are missing out on participating in artistic events because their parents simply cannot afford the extra expense. I am looking to provide my students with the opportunity to participate in an afterschool activity and train them in hopes of achieving college scholarships when they graduate. Students will be able to attend competitions and represent their school in a positive way. They will also be seen as role models for their peers
