Many Special Education students in our 6th-8th grade Middle School have the opportunity to participate in sports and similar activities through our area Special Olympics program. For our students being a part of Special Olympics allows them to play both team and individual sports on a level that fits both their needs and abilities. Many of our students that participate have Intellectual Disabilities, Emotional Disabilities, Autism, or other health impairments.
For our Special Needs students, these sports are their equivalent of Friday Night Lights.
This is their opportunity to show, not only themselves, but every one else that they can achieve and be successful. For many, this serves as a source of great pride and helps empower them to believe that anything is possible. This also takes many of the lessons that we teach through our classes and helps transfer those skills to the world outside of our classroom. With your generous help, we can help them go even further.
Our school is a Title 1 school in rural Arkansas where 50% of our students receive free or reduced lunch.
My Project
Our Special Needs student athletes have the opportunity to compete against several other schools in our area in two track and field meets. In order to be prepared to compete and bring our best game, we need some athletic supplies to help prepare and train us. Many of the events we have the opportunity to compete in involve either walking races or running races; the timers will help us know our progress and pace in order to be competitive. The athletic batons will be helpful because we also have the opportunity to compete in relay races; without having batons to practice with it is likely that we will not pass with our best precision and run the risk of dropping them and disqualifying from the event.
Another event that we have the opportunity to participate in is shot put.
Several of our students have motor coordination issues, so being able to practice holding and throwing a shot put before competition will improve our skills and help us avoid injuries.
Together these resources will help us improve our individual skills and confidence in our ability to succeed on the field.
