My students need learning centers, 2 microscopes, slides, a set of magnets, 2 prisms, 2 magnifiers, 2 stethoscopes, various nature samples, 2 pocket charts for teacher-made material and an ant habitat.
I LOVE SCIENCE! SHOULDN'T EVERYONE?! My science center material has been through 12 years of students and what is left of it has seen better days. I have birds nests, hornets nests, insects, books, and lots of knowledge but am lacking supplies for exploration which fosters scientific thought.
My students live in the inner city and come from homes typical of that environment.
Our school is a small, charter school where we try to provide a safe family atmosphere that develops the whole child. In our state, charter schools do not receive the same funding as public schools so we have less to spend on resources. Even so, parents choose our school over the available public school. Our school not only feeds and sometimes clothes our students, but also strives to teach them that there are options out there for their future and education is the key.
My class of kindergarteners are such a good bunch of eager learners. Each morning we tell "good things" and every day many of them talk about loving their school, loving learning, and loving the friends they have made. School is a beacon of hope for many of these children.
My Project

Through the years my science material has dwindled. Things have become lost, broken, or just used up. Having been a microbiology major before switching to education, I tend to incorporate science into most of what I teach. Kindergarten is the perfect place to introduce every topic imaginable and that is what I strive to do. I know they are taking in everything I am teaching them. Shortly after studying why leaves "change color", one of my students came in from recess where he had been playing in the grass and said, "Look..I have chlorophyll on my pants." How awesome is that! They are excited about science and I need these things to create a center for hands-on exploration of the many topics I teach. Every once in a while I ask, "Who wants to be a scientist when they grow up?" almost every hand in the room goes up. They know that nurses, farmers, and inventors are scientists too. They need to develop a scientific brain and to know that science is a viable option as a career.
Your investment in this project is an investment in yourself.
These budding scientists are the doctors, nurses, inventors, researchers, veterinarians, pharmacists, and health care providers of OUR future. Please help me prepare them for success.
