Science is the most exciting part of the day in our classroom! My students can't wait to see what we are going to learn about next. Their natural curiosity about animals, fossils and plants is contagious!
I teach in a second grade, inner city classroom.
Our school is in a very low income area. Our school is very diverse, and the children are taught respect for our different cultures. We learn from each other every day. Many of my students are refugees from Burma, Iraq and Malaysia. These students had little if any schooling prior to their arrival in the United States. They have had limited experience with science topics such as: fossils, life cycles and the human body.
My Project
Second graders learn about life cycles, plants, animals, fossils, magnets, and the human body as part of the common core curriculum. My students would be able to watch a tadpole develop into a frog right in front of their noses! They'd be able to observe ants working, touch fossils and animal artifacts, and investigate owl pellets. The excitement they would feel when they examine an owl pellet and find mice bones can not be measured with a test. Tending to plants as they develop in our green house would help them understand where their food comes from and develop a healthy respect towards living things. These items would give my students hands-on opportunities to explore, investigate and enhance their love of science.
Your donations will help my "future scientists" have real experiments and investigations in the classroom.
They won't just be reading from an outdated text book about frogs and other animals.
Children learn best when they can touch, observe and experiment Together we can help nurture the future doctors, biologists, and rocket scientists!
