My students need hands on math and science activities, labs, models, and other manipulatives to help them explore and understand new concepts being taught.
My students are faced with the challenge of learning some very difficult math and science concepts.
My class consists of 18 5th grade students.
They are faced with challenging math and science concepts, and 5th grade is a very important year because they need to pass the dreaded FCAT with information they have learned each year of elementary school.
We are a Title One school with a very high percentage of children who receive free lunch due to their socio-economic status. They are also at or near poverty. They are all very eager and excited to succeed during our math and science time, however, this becomes even more of a challenge with the lack of resources at home as well as a lack of background knowledge or experiences. We have some resources at our school, but we are very limited and have to share among the other classes. This becomes difficult in planning lessons around each other's schedules to ensure that we all get use of the materials.
My Project
WIth these materials, the students will see science come alive and be able to learn both science and math by seeing, doing, touching, and feeling. We learn a lot about the human body, and with the Human Body take apart models, they will be able to really see and learn how the body parts work within their table groups. We have some models of the electricity lab at our school, but this year we ran into the problem of not having enough for each classroom to be able to do the experiment because there were too few. When I was able to get them into my classroom, we had already moved on from that subject. The mastering math facts, gallon measurement, and problem solving kits will allow centers to be involved to help differentiate the learning in the classroom. There are so many levels of students in our classroom, some that need more one on one time and others that get the concept right away, so this will help reach all of the students.
Funding our project will help all of our children have access to the amazing world of science and math.
It will benefit all learners, and they will not have to rely solely on books and other media. They will also not have to miss out on any chance of hands on activities due to the lack of current resources at our school.
