This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
The future Veterinarian, Doctor, Researcher, Nurse, or Scientist is in search of academic nourishment!
Our future scientists are students at a magnet high school that specialize in Agricultural Sciences in Pennsylvania. I am in my third year teaching 11th and 12th grade Small Animal/ Veterinary Technology and I am looking to enhance our program for the 21st century.
With the increased interest in animal and human health, it is important that we provide the skills needed for students that inspire to go onto those fields, Biotechnology is an essential component of the biological sciences, as scientists search for the next cure for cancer in dogs. We have many students that will go on to become scientist, but they are not prepared in the basic knowledge of biotechnology.
I am planning to incorporate a biotechnology unit where students will extract DNA, replicate it, and amplify on a gel to demonstrate the importance of DNA on how it is used to detect specific genotypes and phenotypes. We will need a starter set of 20ul and 200ul micropipetters so that the students can become familiar with different tools needed in a research laboratory.
Your contributions will help inspire our students to careers in the sciences and also provide skills needed to be successful in a research laboratory.
