I am an Instructor that teaches the Medical Assisting program. My students are awesome! They typically get into this program because they are caring and compassionate and want to show those attributes once they graduate and work with real live patients. We love to laugh in class... that makes learning fun! As a former nurse in the hospital, I love sharing my nursing stories with them and how to handle those certain medical situations.
My Project
This year has been extremely tough on both students and teachers due to Covid-19, and I no longer have the right amount of materials to ensure every student can learn effectively in my class without sharing. During a typical year, my students are in my classroom daily learning all types of medical-related units. These units are usually accompanied by hands-on skills in the lab. This is really a highlight for them to practice these skills and it really tends to spark their interest in the medical pathway. However, we need to be created on how to incorporate virtual learners at home.
With the Covid impact, it has created a very unique environment for us to navigate.
The supplies I am requesting will benefit both in-class and virtual students. Most of these materials can be practiced and used at home. For example, my list includes practice antibiotic labels, tourniquets, and PPE goggles. This will allow students that are impacted by Covid, or choosing to stay remote, to practice dosage labeling and tourniquet placement at home. They can pick up the labels at school to take home or I can scan them into Schoology for them to practice various dosage calculations. The goggles can be used during our PPE demonstration in class. The at-home students can also participate when learning about PPE by picking up the goggles and other PPE supplies we use in the classroom. The other supplies, such as the pill crusher, vacutainer, vials, and ampules will be used for in-class students but will also be demonstrated on proper use to my remote students via online demonstration. The virtual students will be able to actually see me use these instruments and ask me questions during my virtual meeting with them. I appreciate your consideration in funding these essential items for my medical classroom.
