My "kinder-roo's" love to be active, dance, read, act, problem solve, construct, and paint. This year we have built relationships and developed a positive, risk taking community for all. Room 5 is "filling buckets" with positivity.
As a Kindergarten teacher in a low-income/high poverty school district, my students are faced with several challenges both in and out of the classroom.
Despite the many challenges they face, I am looking to keep things simple and provide my students with creative and meaningful learning experiences. From the minute they walk in the door of my classroom I focus on their potential and growth while they are with me. I may not be able to control their home lives, however, I can certainly control their experience during the school day. By doing this in a creative and positive way, I am hopeful to inspire even our earliest learners to continue on a path of academic excellence.
My Project
Kindergarten is typically a child's first learning experience which "sets the stage" for future learning. You can look at it like building the base of a pyramid, if your base is weak then your pyramid won't stand long. This is relatable to learning math skills and strategies. With one more trimester as a kindergarten community, we are working very hard to get ready for the various types of challenges life will bring our way.
Creating a strong sense of financial literacy skills will support these students throughout life.
The math materials selected such as magnetic coins, base ten set, hands-on number grids, and number line sliders will support my students' foundational mathematical skills. With a strong sense of math skills and number sense children will become more successful in financial literacy skills as well!
