As a teacher in a low-income/high poverty school district, my students are faced with several challenges both in and out of the classroom. My campus has more than 80% of our student population is on free and reduced lunch. Despite the many challenges they face, I am looking to provide my students with a creative and meaningful learning experience. They deserve every opportunities that is available to them.
My students are bilingual and many of them are first generation elementary students.
A lot of the families were impacted by Harvey, many losing everything, having to start all over again. Despite all the challenges they face they are always eager to learn new information. "Success is no accident. It is hard work, perseverance, learning, studying, sacrifice and most of all, love of what you are doing or learning to do".
Reading is linked to fundamental brain development which is why it is imperative that my class receive these IPADS and headphones. I plan to use the IPADS and headphones with the Istation for Reading programs. It has been proven that students who use Istation Reading makes greater gain in overall reading ability compared to those who do not use the curriculum. Poverty is the biggest factor whether or not children will become successful and go to college. Most of my students come from families that are below poverty line, students who's parents did not finish school nor know how to read. Funding my project will help my students not become another statistics, will give my students opportunities that would not be available to them otherwise.
