My Students

My school is an urban high school of approximately 1,250 students. Many of them have few opportunities to explore and experience areas outside of their very local world. The town is also quite diverse, with a rich ethnic blend and wide socio-economic gaps. They have a keen awareness of this, and it helps them see past barriers that can result from such a varied student body.

A trip to the High School Model United Nations convention to represent our school, and interact with hundreds of students from other schools, will be a formative experience unlike any other.

We hope to make this experience a permanent tradition at our school, and this inaugural journey will no doubt inspire other students to join the club and, ultimately, become a more informed global citizen.

My Project

The Model United Nations is amazing, simply put. First, students from all over the country form a delegation and get assigned a real UN member nation. Our delegation of students and faculty were assigned Sierra Leone. Our first mission is to conduct exhaustive research about that nation to determine the most critical issues it faces. Then the magic happens.

Once at the conference, our UN delegation will attend numerous meetings, speak publicly about a wide variety of topics, and cast votes regarding UN resolutions-all while balancing the specific interests of Sierra Leone with the general needs of the world community.

This simulation-style event will place us directly in the heat of discussion, force us to make tough or unpopular choices, and practice the delicate art of compromise.
