My 3rd, 4th and 5th, grade Gifted and Talented students love to create persuasive essays and now we are ready to take this love to the next level! I teach over 50 children in high poverty, rural communities in an area of South Carolina. Part of our curriculum focuses on students learning the art of persuasion. We are also tying each aspect of our curriculum into careers. I have over 50 brilliant, young minds ready to learn, however, there are many challenges in our classroom that seem to be holding us back due to budget cuts. Also, I am a first year teacher and my personal resources are very limited. That is where you come in!

The three communities I teach in are all very small, low economic areas with a lot of agricultural background. Statistically, it is very likely that these students will grow up and remain members of their communities. Through our curriculum, we are exploring various career options for these unique students.

This unit that I am proposing, with your help, will allow the children to explore job possibilities as lawyers, judges, and local/national politicians through the art of role playing! We will be able to debate the various issues from the book "Philosophy for Kids" in a political debate style. Also, the activities in "Jury Trials for the Classroom" will allow the kids to recreate a court room setting and test out their mock trial skills! Finally, the novel, "The True Confessions of Charlotte Doyle" will allow the children to see into the life of a brave, adventurous girl who is on trial for a murder she did not commit while out at sea. This will tie in the Literature aspect of our unit!

It is my goal to empower students to grow up and choose careers that will fulfill them and create change in the world! Please help these students use their gifted little brains in a way that will help themselves and others. This project will integrate reading, writing, critical/creative thinking, and debating skills. Also, it will boost their confidence and allow them to see that they have the power to do and be anything they want! After numerous budget cuts and a lack of funding, there simply is no money left for this project. We want to create future lawyers and debaters, but we cannot do it without you!
