Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
The students in my school are bright, enthuastic children who have dedicated themselves to creating a school newspaper covering events and topics that they feel are important to our school community. Our school is lacking technology, which is impacting their ability to learn real-world skills such as researching, typing, and simple skills such as turning on computer and opening a document. This group of students is particularly special because at such a young age they are determined and committed to learning how to interview students and faculty, brainstorm topics of interest, and engage in discussions that impact what will be published in the paper. We are so lucky to have a group of students who love to write and learn!
My Project
Our school is lacking technology; we have 5 laptops currently that work for a school of 300 students! Last year, I co-founded a Newspaper Club, "The BLS Buzz," for students in grades 3-5 at my school. These students are committed to writing articles highlighting school events and keeping our students informed about issues they feel are relevant. Our club consisted of photographers, columnists, reporters, and artists who applied for positions and took their roles very seriously. During our club meetings, we had several issues with our computers: they are either non-functioning, turning off, or never turning on. Our goal is to educate our students on how to write effectively; type efficiently; format the newspaper; write, revise, and edit articles; and prepare them for the world today!
