Future Forensic Scientists Use Gel Electrophoresis to Study DNA
My students need a gel electrophoresis kit to load DNA and perform electrophoresis. They will analyze banding patterns of the DNA to further learn about the importance of DNA in forensics!
This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
Most girls lose interest in science and math by the time they reach middle school. My students are curious and really need a variety of ways to explore to keep them interested in science and math. My students are wonderfully amazing young women. They are incredibly curious and bright. We are an all-girls public charter school that is empowering young women to reach for whatever career they want. We want to break social norms and pride ourselves on pushing our girls in the areas of science and math!
My Project
These materials will give my students a deeper understanding of DNA technologies used in forensic investigation, while engaging them by solving a mystery! Sure, they can compare DNA samples on a piece of paper...but who wouldn't want to load DNA samples, perform electrophoresis, then compare the suspect's DNA bands to the DNA found as "evidence" in a crime scene? Both the classroom kit and the demo kit will give my students the opportunity to immerse themselves in what forensic scientists do each and every day, while giving them a deeper understanding of how DNA is the building block of our genetic makeup.
