My students need one minute sand timers in order to improve their reading fluency.

Our 2nd grade students are future fluent readers! Each day they practice reading with expression, appropriate speed and accuracy with their fluency partners. They love this time but it could be enhanced with timers!
I teach at a Title 1 school in an urban area of North Carolina.
Over 50% of our students are reading below grade level. We are working hard to drastically change that percentage! In 2nd grade, we have students reading as low as a level C and as high as a level Q. All of our student are working at their level in order to grow. Our students face many challenges, including poverty and homelessness, but when they come to school, they come ready to learn!
Our students will use these timers during their fluency time. They will be able to determine how many words their partner reads in a minute so that they can work hard to beat that number each day! Our 2nd grade students love fluency time but we know that timers would make it even better! Right now, the students are able to focus on reading with expression and accuracy but it is harder to focus on speed. They need to know how many words they can read at the beginning of the week so that they can try to beat this number each day.
This project is important because we want to send our students to 2nd grade reading on grade-level.
In order to reach this goal, our students have to be able to read fluently. The timers that this project would provide us would help our students become fluent readers at a faster pace
