Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Do you remember as a child creating wonderful drawings inspired by your favorite Disney animated features and cartoons. I loved drawing animals, and had various colored markers to use in my beautiful, colorful drawings. I was inspired by movies such as Peter Pan, Lady and the Tramp, and Snow White.
The students at my school are low income.
Most of them are from immigrant families. Their parents come to the sunny area we live to pick fruit, work at hotels, and amusement parks. These students love to watch Disney movies and their only opportunity to see any type of art is to walk across the street to the swap meet. They are English learners so many of the students have a difficult time reading and writing. They love to draw and create art because there is no language deficiency in creating drawings. As they are very poor, they have limited funds to purchase art supplies. Our school's focus is in learning English so there is no funding for art materials. Previously, the district purchased an art program with a grant, but we have run out of money and supplies for this program.
My Project
My students are currently using an art program in which they learn the basic elements of art. Line, Shapes, Colors, and Textures. They need fine black markers to draw the outlines of various shapes to learn outlining and the elements of line. The students further use colored markers to explore the elements of color when drawing. These requested materials would be shared by the whole school to supplement the art program. The drawings are displayed throughout the school in the office, the district office, and at Open House. There are poster contests also which the students can enter and create beautiful posters for various causes such as keeping the city clean or the school drug free.
These donations will make a difference to the students as they will have the much needed markers in order to complete the art projects in our program.
There is no money to buy markers so the students would have to use pencils or crayons and that would not allow them to explore all the avenues of the elements of art. In the past, my students have used these materials to create beautiful posters and a couple of my students have won contests and received a plaque from the city in which we live.
