Help me give my students hands on experience creating simple machines using physics principles and imagination. One is an aspiring aeronautical engineer whose mind can see things I can't and most are more doers that reader.

Celebrate Black Teachers and Students

This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.

My Students

I have the honor of teaching a unique group of students with emotional disabilities in a self-contained setting. We learn all academic subjects but, more importantly, we learn social skills, life skills, and coping skills. We replace behaviors that have worked with behaviors that will work a lifetime.

No two students are alike and their abilities, disabilities, and learning profiles vary greatly.

My teaching philosophy is to meet them where they are and take them where we want to go, the sky is the limit! All of my students have different backgrounds and diagnosis which impact their self-esteem and challenges, making each one a puzzle for me to figure out, support, lift up, and teach. My biggest goal is to help them understand themselves and gain the skills they will need to be lifelong learners and independent in life.

My Project

Constructivism is a research based method of teaching and learning. Following models and directions, then evaluating, modifying, and testing is how so many things and ideas have been created.

Our students are not traditional readers or pencil/paper learners.

They choose a misfit bin of Legos in their free time to create. Having these kits and their instructional materials will give me the ability to help them create, think creatively and problem solve. We want to make connections to Edison's trials, to circuitry, and to all the scientific articles we've read about prototypes and using ideas to solve the problems of our world today, from recycling bubble gum to eliminating trash in the oceans!
