My students need cookbooks, aprons, equipment, and activity materials to master the basic skills of cooking and will allow them to be life long, healthy chefs.
"An apple a day keeps the doctor away". Many children in America aren't learning the facts about nutrition and healthy eating at home. My students have the opportunity to learn healthy and safe cooking habits in Home and Careers and are looking for some materials to help this effort.
I teach at a K-8 magnet school.
To describe the school, my students are in a low-income district. Many of the students in the district live in poverty and have government aid when it comes to food, clothing, etc. Many students qualify for free lunch/breakfast programs due to the income level of their parents. Many of them come to school without being taught some of the basic skills that will help them be successful in life.
It is important for these students to come out of school with life skills that they are lacking at home. They come from every different background and there is no guarantee that they are getting the support and care at home that would be ideal. They have great potential and opportunity to make something of their lives and hopefully this school is the stepping stone to that success.
My Project
My request is for a supply of materials that will help the students during our Food and Nutrition Unit in the Home and Careers Classroom. Some of the materials include enough aprons for the class, kitchen math activities, cooking kits with some basic equipment for running successful labs, a variety of cookbooks to meet the needs of the students, and Food Pyramid activities to help them understand some of the basics of nutritious eating.
With these materials my students will have a great opportunity to dive into the culinary world, possibly even for the first time. Shockingly, many students enter middle school with very little, if any idea how to cook even the most basic foods. My goal is to get my students excited about cooking, informed of their choices to become healthy, life-long eaters and prepare delicious and nutritious meals.
Students will learn the basic skills of menu planning, preparation, and improve literacy skills in the kitchen(recipes, nutrition labels, etc.)
When students in America walk out of high school, they are all going in every direction with jobs or college, etc.
No matter which direction they go in, all will be accountable for their own nutrition and the needs of their families. One of the most important skills children can learn early on is how to maintain a nutritious and healthy diet, along with being a smart consumer (shopping and preparing meals). With FEED USA and your help, this is an opportunity for students to learn skills that last a lifetime.
