My students need 4 laptops/4 Microsoft Office Packages for:
-Resumes/cover letters
-Online stock market game
-Create personal budgets & financial statements
By the end of the year, I would like students to create a monthly budget for their future self in Microsoft Excel and then present their budget using Microsoft PowerPoint. In order to do this, students need to research a career, the salary associated with the career, and realistic monthly expenses.
I teach Financial Planning and Accounting to a diverse group of high school juniors and seniors from Boston.
Approximately 70% of the students come from low-income homes with little exposure to financial professionals. I strive to integrate exposure to professional careers, such as Accounting & Finance, as part of the course curriculum. We participate in the following local and national competitions to gain exposure to professional environments, The Stock Market Game and the PWC Business Case Challenge. When participating in these competitions, we lack adequate technology for research and analysis, which unfairly disadvantages the students.
My students lack exposure to current technologies that would be beneficial to a financial curriculum. Tools like laptops and printers would benefit my students by allowing them portable access to business tools and common software technologies to aid in their research.
My Project
My students need 4 laptops and 4 Microsoft Office Packages to help with the following: Resumes and cover letters in Word, online stock market game, create personal budgets in Excel then present using PowerPoint and create financial statements in Excel.
In order to have a future in business my students need to know how to perform research, navigate Microsoft Office and work in teams. Students will use MS Excel to create personal budgets and financial statements and use MS PowerPoint for classroom presentations. My students are at a disadvantage to their peers in other schools without the aforementioned opportunities.
Franklin D.
Roosevelt said "ÂWe cannot always build the future for our youth, but we can build our youth for the future," and that is what I want for my students. Students will leave my classroom with a professional resume, cover letter, and 21st century technology skills.
