Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I have an energetic, inquisitive and enthusiastic group of twenty-six 7- and 8-year-olds in the inner city of Providence, Rhode Island. They are always eager to come to school and love to read, write and problem solve in such thoughtful and creative ways! My students are so appreciative of each other and all that we do every day. They are culturally diverse and enjoy sharing their own unique experiences with the class. We learn from each other. My school is working hard to build community among families and staff and we have a safe, respectful environment.
My Project
I will be teaching a diverse group of second graders at various literacy levels in September and would really love to be able to teach them to write informative, narrative, and opinion pieces by providing them with beautiful examples of high quality literature which I will guide them to learn from. With these “Learn-To-Write With Mentor Texts” at two different academic levels ( K-1 & 2-3) I will be able to create and implement individual lessons to introduce each type of writing and also be able to provide students with concrete models that illustrate each writer’s craft. As my students complete the mini-lessons and corresponding activities they will master a variety of techniques to become stronger, more powerful writers. They will learn to create attention grabbing introductions, to develop a topic and to use persuasive language and descriptive details. Each set includes 9 books ( both fiction and nonfiction titles), plus an extensive 20 page guide complete with 12 step by step lessons, graphic organizers and a rubric for focused practice recognizing the features of each type of writing. I really want to do the best I can to provide effective and engaging instruction and any help towards bringing these resources to my classroom is greatly appreciate. Thank you so much for your time and attention.
