The students at our small charter high school are those who, for whatever reason, chose to forego traditional public school and embrace a smaller setting with better access to staff. Many are great young minds who have the misfortune of coming from less than stable home lives, along with 87% qualifying for free or reduced lunch.
We have many outside-the-box thinkers who are eager to do whatever they can to help our small, tight-knit community and serve as positive role models for the younger students.
At our school, we have students of all different math levels. Many come to us not having learned basic fractions, decimals, and percentages, while others have passed honors Algebra in their previous schools.
My classroom provides a hands-on Montessori-inspired high school leveled-learning experience where every student is assessed and placed on a spectrum from basic elementary math all the way up through Calculus.
Students are taught short lessons in small groups and encouraged to use all resources, including the above manipulatives and along with their peers to learn and master mathematical concepts. Mastery in our competency-based classroom is demonstrated through frequent projects that allow students to investigate a real-world problem, use math to formulate a solution, and present to the class.
The fraction pieces, learning tiles, stopwatches, and other materials will serve as indispensable tools for generations of students to come and will make learning math easier, more fun, and more engaging.
