Celebrate Black Teachers and Students

This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.

My Students

I teach students in a special education resource room. They all have learning and/or emotional disabilities that include other health impairments (usually due to ADHD), autism, specific learning disabilities, emotional disturbance, and/or intellectual disabilities.

Most of the students in my classroom struggle to focus and concentrate, and many also struggle with emotional regulation.

Despite their difficulties, my students are a wonderful group of learners who work every day to improve not only their academic skills, but also their social/emotional skills, as well.

My Project

Class pets bring so many wonderful benefits to the classroom! I hope to adopt 2 guinea pigs that will help my students to learn a myriad of skills.

According to a study conducted by the American Humane Association, a class pet can teach children important values like compassion, empathy, respect, and responsibility for other living things, as well as give them much-needed leadership skills and stress relief.

The study also showed that kids turn to their pets for emotional well-being, with 40% of children choosing pet companionship when feeling down. Kids were also found to seek out their pets when feeling tired, upset, scared or lonely, and 53% of respondents said they enjoy doing homework with pets nearby. “Being around animals is extremely good for children,” says Dr. Harvey Markovitch, pediatrician and editor of The Archives of Disease in Childhood. “They’re good for morale, and teach children about relationships and about the needs of another living being – learning to care for a pet helps them to learn how to care for people”. Studies show caring for pets aids in improving school attendance and teaching children about responsibility.

I'm requesting all the things we'll need to get our guinea pig habitat set up: a Midwest cage (this cage will provided plenty of room for 2 guinea pigs and is the one recommended by guinea pig experts), hideaways (guinea pigs need a place to hide so they can feel safe), a water bottle, dishes, bedding, and food to get us started. I'm also requesting two carriers for when the guinea pigs need to be transported to the vet or home for a long weekend or over the summer. With this set up, we'll be able to give the guinea pigs a healthy and enjoyable home in the classroom.
