Our school is a kindergarten through 8th grade school in the Fairmount area of Philadelphia. Most of my students are bused to school. They are from all areas of Philadelphia. There are 20 students with all intellectual disabilities in this life skills support classroom. The students work on academics, as well as skills that they will need for independent living.
The students enjoy coming to school each day.
They really love their peers and the adults who work in the classroom! We have birthday parties for each student and we celebrate every holiday! We are all one big family!
My Project
We are in desperate need of some new furniture in our classroom! The furniture in our special education classroom is very old and it is falling apart. We have two large cabinets that do not close. The cabinets have rust and stains all over them. The shelves have permanent stains on them. We have tried to fix our furniture and cover it up, but the furniture is at least 30 years old. The furniture is an eyesore to students and staff. The classroom rug is old, and stained.
Students will use the "map" carpet as a reading rug and as a free-time rug.
The cabinets will be used to store educational materials for students to access. The bookcase will be used to store our classroom books. Studies have shown that student engagement and motivation increases when their classroom is appealing, neat and orderly. Please help us make our classroom a better learning environment for our Life Skills special education students.
