New York City Public School 56 Queens is a Title I school with a student body of approximately 70% eligible for free lunch. Our school had the good fortune to be rewired for both Internet connectivity and cable TV access. In a classroom with large numbers of students, it is important to place equipment in a place that ensures both student and equipment safety.
A new industry of specialized furniture to accommodate these needs has developed. The 21st century classroom has to keep pace by protecting any newly acquired equipment bearing in mind that this equipment will be used for some time. Teachers and students are grateful to receive any new equipment with the full knowledge that it has to last as long as possible. That's where the appropriate furniture comes in. Shelves to place multimedia educational equipment such as TVs, DVD/VCR players, and whatever else might be in a classroom fortunate enough to be funded are critical to continued student/teacher use while properly storing the materials.
Our classroom would make wonderful use of such furniture which would then avoid the hazard of placing technology on the tops of book shelves. "An ounce of prevention [in this case, pounds of prevention] is worth a pound [in today's time it would be days] of cure". Furniture to secure multimedia education is one of those perhaps not flashy yet very valuable contributions to a classroom that integrates technology and curriculum on a daily basis. What was once considered a luxury has become a need in the students' learning environment.
We're hoping DonorsChoose will agree and consider our multimedia furniture request. It would go a long way towards ensuring the safety of students and longevity of the equipment.
As always, we thank DonorsChoose for its vision and support of our public schools, students, teachers and community.
