Many of my students are from low-income families and receive free lunch. Our school is the only high school in our area and 61% of our students receive free or reduced-price lunch. Sometimes, eating a healthy, well-balanced meal happens only in school for many of them. Being able to grow fruits, vegetables, and herbs for them to take home and share with their families is something we have been wanting to do in class for a long time. We also have livestock to take care of that we use as learning tools in the classroom. Taking the livestock section one step further and harvesting them for food will teach the students even more about self-sustainability.
Sharing the bounty they raise in class with their families will solidify the teachings and experiences they have in class.
They will be able to share with others how they worked and harvested what we grew and raised then turn around and share with their families what we ate.
My Project
School is going to be widely different than what we have been used to until now. The techniques of learning will be new and uncharted but we will make do with what we have. Learning new things will be exciting and welcomed after not being able to associate with others for so long. We are a blended school which means students with spend half their time at home with distance learning and half the week at school doing face-to-face instruction. These kits will be great for our in-person time together.
Growing mushrooms will be an unusual and exciting thing to learn for the students.
Having ready-made mushroom kits will be our first venture into mushroom raising, and then we will learn more about making our own kits to grow in class.
