This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
I teach 13 through 21-year-old young adults with a variety of intellectual, physical, and sensory impairments. My students are focusing their time in school on preparing for life after high school. I focus on functional academics, daily living skills, and job skills.
Each student is working towards being an independent, working member of the community.
Some of my students participate in internships and jobs around our school building and in the community as part of their education. They practice cooking, cleaning, money, time, and functional writing skills.
My Project
I teach in a county that has a high percentage of low income students. Extra money for Christmas gifts for family members or for field trips is not something that the families have.
This Cricut Machine will assist the students in making ornaments to give away to family members as gifts, or to sell at our annual bazaar in order to raise funds for field trips.
Usually, each year I ask local businesses, friends, and family members for donations to my classroom in order to fund a variety of field trips. This year, many businesses and individuals were hit hard by COVID-19, therefore asking for donations was not an option. This machine will give us the extra boost that we need in order to create homemade one of a kind gifts.
