Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
The students at Reading High School are beyond resilient. They all are growing up in an Urban area, many walking to school, and most of the upperclassmen working to help support their families. With life's hardships outside of school, it is my responsibility to help make these students safe, and consistently learning in class and out of class.
Many of our resilient, bi-lingual students are survivors of trauma.
From witnessing gun violence, fleeing their home country for better opportunities, to gang related fights the fight or flight response is embedded in many of our schools youth. With that being said the mental health aspect in our school is trying. One obstacle we have is giving students in school suspension if they do not want to participate in class or are emotionally dysregulated due to a trauma trigger. Thus, they are sent to ISS where productivity is low.
My goal is to revamp in school suspension and make it a required place where students aren't punished for their actions, but they have to learn from them. They will learn through emotion regulation exercises, yoga, hands on activities, career exploration, and mental health group counseling with a trained school counselor.
My Project
Using yoga as a skill and tool to regulate emotions will help students use positive behavior in their in school suspension. With productive time in detention students will learn mental health work, yoga, trauma informed yoga, and begin group therapy in flexible seating. The hope is that time roaming the halls and not doing work will lead them to a place where they will complete their ISS in a productive manner.
Trauma informed practices result in less behavioral obstacles.
The research shows that productive detentions lead to students who will be ore motivated in their school, and more self aware.
