Help us get a school newspaper! Our school currently does not have publishing capability. But, we have many motivated students who desperately want to write, draw, report, edit and publish a newspaper for our school!
My students are motivated to participate in authentic learning where they actually become writers who publish. They live in the beautiful Bay Area but their families have come from all over the world, from Afghanistan to China to many parts of India and all over the United States. They are an enthusiastic group used to traditional learning, test taking and worksheets. This year they are engaging in a more student-centered and non traditional way of learning. Our Newspaper Club is the first of its kind at our school and the students who are running the club are overjoyed to have the opportunity to actually impact our school by providing information about the real world!
Having a school newspaper can do wonders for students in terms of their reading and writing skills. When students know their writing will actually be read they are motivated to revise, edit and make their writing the best that it can be. When students know that their peers have written 100% of what is contained in a newspaper they are so much more willing to actually read the paper!
With a school newspaper our student staff will also gain real world experience with journalism, politics, world news, current events and much more.
In order to a school to have a newspaper they need a printer! We have chosen the HP Laserjet Pro M477fdw Multifunction Wireless Color Laser Printer with Duplex Printing because it prints fast, in color and dual sided. It's perfect for what we need to print our newspaper!
In Their Own Words
As a team we want to help inform our student population about current events, real world problems as well as in school events. I, (president of the newspaper club) have always loved journalism, and I know others who do too. We want to learn leadership skills that can help us down the road.
Our club has editors and a president. This way, students can learn the fundamentals of helping guide their peers, and to make tough executive decisions. These can not only build public speaking and social skills, but it can show our club members how a decision made by one person can impact our whole school.
The project is extremely important as our school has never had a newspaper, or any publication for that matter. The newspaper club believes that our students should at least have some idea about what's going on outside the school, as well as in the school. Learning about politics and news can help build our understanding of the real world. But, in order to make our school newspaper a reality we need a printer.
The printer, that we could get if this project is funded, prints dual-sided, color copies very fast. This is just what we need to print our school newspaper!
