Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
We work at a Title I school which is one of the lowest income schools in the district. We have 100% free lunches for our students. We are 3 second grade classes with a diverse student population. Our students love to learn and are always asking questions. A lot of our students show great leadership skills in the making.
We have 78 students and out of these students, we have a diverse population, ranging from different religions, ethnicity, a cultural background to different learning needs, behaviors and abilities.
The community that they live in is very impoverished. One hard thing for them is going to school because it isn't a high priority for them or their families. Our goal is to make school a great place to learn and motivate them to want to come to school.
My Project
Most of our students cannot afford the cost to go to see a movie, let alone a live musical. A lot of our students have never been outside of town except for when they go on field trips. Helping fund this field trip will help a lot of our students experience a musical and go to a big city for the first time.
Having a chance to see a live musical will help improve student's understanding of how art is created not only with pens, markers and paints, but also with song and dance.
We will be tying this field trip in with their art standard and reading standards. They will be reading the book, Dragons Love Tacos before and after the field trip to help with their compare and contrasting skills. They will be creating their own plays to go with the book and use the skills that they observed in the musical.
