Where is your favorite place to read? Is it in a sunny window or a comfortable chair? My students rely on me to create these comfy spaces to enjoy fantastic books in our classroom. Unfortunately, the only space they have for reading now is at their desk or the hard floor. They need a large rug!
I have the pleasure of teaching 26 amazing 5th graders in a small community school in Northern California.
My students are bright, intuitive, funny, and hard working. They are avid readers with a zest for getting lost in great books. Furthermore, they are active participants in their classroom and enjoy taking ownership of the space by helping to keep our room clean and organized.
My Project
I am asking for your help in funding our classroom rug project for several reasons. Our classroom is a large open space with cold concrete floors. This limits the students to only being able to sit at their desks. With a large floor rug, my students will be able to sit other locations in the room during reading time, lessons, and activities. The rug will invite students to linger a little longer as they settle into books that expand their knowledge of limitless topics. Also, I will be able to deliver short lessons to students as they sit directly in front of me on the rug. This teaching technique limits peer distraction as well as distractions from items at student desks. Furthermore, students will be able to use math manipulatives, such as cubes and pattern blocks, on the rug without the distraction of clanging blocks on desks. This eliminates the problem of noisy distractions with manipulatives, which is a valid reason for many teachers avoiding their use.
My students spend six hours per day in our classroom.
For them to get the most out of the space, they should have a floor rug that will give them greater use of the room and not limit them to their one specific chair. Scientific research has proven that large muscle movement is critical to the learning process. Please help my students have the benefit of moving around the room for various learning activities by funding our classroom rug project.
