Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students are truly exceptional! They work hard to succeed. They persevere when faced with a challenge, creatively inspire our community, and believe in one another. They are tomorrow's leaders and world-changers. They are our future and together we can help them reach their dreams. All of our students receive free breakfast and lunch. They come to our Title I school every day where resources are very limited. Some of our students are unable to purchase supplies, and the school is only able to do so much with the budget they have. Our students strive to do their best!
My students are energetic, smart, and motivated to succeed.
Even though they come from a variety of backgrounds of race, religion, academic levels, and family structure, we all work together to create a unique learning experience, instilling a love of learning and exploring that will last a lifetime. Many of my students' parents work multiple jobs and are unable to attend school events; therefore, parents are missing out on their students' successes.
My Project
We will work together as a community of 525 students to turn the back of our school into a sustainable vegetable and habitat garden, including a friendship garden. We would like to implement paths between the garden beds in our school garden. We need to ensure that all beds are accessible to all students. The paving stones will allow all students to have access to the garden beds. This is crucial to ensure that we have equity for all students. This will also allow us to not track mud into the school from working in the garden.
After brainstorming possible solutions, the paving stones are the most effective in creating an educational environment for all to be included.
Students have been a part of each step along the way in designing our garden, from researching winter crops, writing and presenting proposals, and measuring and graphing our garden spaces, to filling beds with soil, planting seeds, labeling crops and following through with all of the daily maintenance that a garden needs. We have an area with three old, pre-existing raised beds that need to be replaced. We have 6 beds that will be installed. We have no other supplies yet to help us begin or sustain this STEM project.
This new and improved garden will help us to continue to provide healthy vegetables for us to enjoy and donate to those in need, and, more importantly, it will be an engaging process through which our students and families will learn teamwork, perseverance, experiential learning of grade-level standards, and the rewarding benefits of hard work that come from following through with a long-term plan. It will also contain a friendship garden.
