Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

This project contains a few different components. The first is functionality. Students cannot learn if they are hungry or lack the needed materials. The second is enjoyment - because I personally think learning should be fun. The last component is engagement. Hands-on experiences are often more memorable.

Around 20% of the energy we gain from food is used by the brain.

Hunger can have a significant impact on a person's ability to think, concentrate, and regulate emotions. I don't work well when I'm "hangry", and neither do my students. Funding this project will provide granola bars, fruit snacks, and crackers that students have open access to. This project will also provide students with another essential - pencils and glue sticks.

Learning should be fun. My classes play games to review content, and winners have access to a prize box. After asking for student feedback, I have learned that they would like tech decks, candy (or really any food), Pokemon cards, games, and fidget toys. Funding this project would make that a reality for them.

The last component of this project is hands-on learning. My freshmen have been begging for a dissection lab. Students mentioned that they were meant to do a cow's eye dissection in middle school, but the pandemic obviously prevented that. Donating to this project will provide us with enough cow eyes for students to engage in the lab in groups of two.
