Help me give my students an iPod touch and an iPad mini to help with self regulation of breaks and to increase and practice functional communication skills.
I love that my students really put in effort. For instance, I have a student who is working on functional communication skills and uses an iPod to practice this skill. When he requests it appropriately, he gets the biggest smile on his face. He dances around with it when he gets really excited and I love to see him happy and enjoying life. My other student works with two staff members throughout the school day and stays busy throughout the day. While it is difficult to understand all of his needs due to his limited verbal ability , it is the best part of my day to hear him giggle.
My Project
I have two students who needs devices to help them develop and maintain functional communication skills along with self regulation. It will be a huge benefit for each of them to have their own devices to enable them to practice these needed skills consistently throughout the day.
Have you ever found it difficult to explain your wants and needs?
My students struggle with this everyday--without the convenience of spoken language. One student will use the iPod to practice requesting it and using manners to access the things he wants. This increases his ability to regulate is emotions and practice functional communication skills. We take data on how often he does this and to what extent he needs prompts.
The other student would use an iPad mini for very similar things. Many times students with limited verbal communication need functional ways to communicate. By providing them with these much needed opportunities we would be opening doors for them in ways that may have always been closed.
