My school has recently expanded the scope of the class I teach. We're a pretty standard computer class, where each student can work on their own ThinkPad. We do everything from beginner coding on sites like Scratch to typing lessons to practice with Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint. However, the class is evolving into something that more resembles a STEAM setting. This is where I'm struggling to find suitable and reasonable materials that can challenge my students.
Right now, everything is out of pocket as I try and find exciting projects and materials for us to use this coming school year.
At the end of last year, we tried our hands at different types of design. We made DaVinci bridges out of popsicle sticks and lumber I purchased from the hardware store. We designed ergonomic keyboards based on personal preference. We also challenged ourselves with team-building as we attempted the Marshmallow Challenge.
Our final project of the year involved each student collaborating to build their very own cardboard arcade game, inspired by the viral video, Caine's Arcade. This year, I'd love to be able to provide even more meaningful learning opportunities. Thank you for your time!
Students will be able to design and flesh-out their ideas in CAD, which will be used to create a more welcoming environment for the school. Beautifying the campus not only gives the students something in which they can take pride, but it benefits the community surrounding the school. Students can use the printers as functional decorations and other practical uses which can be inexpensively generated. Having a printer will allow students to more quickly and easily find and build the solutions to the problems they see around school and its campus. This project will benefit every student in school, regardless of whether they’re in our class or not.
