I teach students with learning disabilities, autism, Down's Syndrome and other special needs. My students are special thinkers who come to school each day eager to learn and explore. Most of the students at our school qualify for state funded breakfast and lunch. Most of my students are English Language Learners and they are emerging as bilingual.
My students work hard every day to learn reading, math, and social skills.
They are full of energy and excitement and our classroom is welcoming, fun environment. We work with each student individually so they can reach their full potential.
The classroom kitchen, including a convection toaster oven, electric skillet, blender and mixer, will allow us to teach STEM principles to my special needs students. We will use measuring cups and spoons to teach math skills. We will use food to teach science skills such as states of matter, chemical reactions, nutrition and our senses.
A main focus in my room is teaching our students skills to be independent.
Having a classroom kitchen will allow them to learn how to make simple meals and dishes so they can feed themselves, or make food for their families. We can teach lessons such as sequencing, following directions and patience while they are learning skills and engaged.
All kids love to eat and by using food to engage the students while teaching math, science and reading the students will not even realize they are doing work. We can also teach proper nutrition, manners and sharing with the classroom kitchen.
