Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I teach reading in small groups to children, who are right now, not making standards in the Bronx. I teach in a high poverty neighborhood. Many students, and their families, are new to the country. My students face many obstacles and challenges each day coming to school. Many are living in a homeless shelter, in foster care, or in a crowded apartment with their relatives. This does not stop my students' enthusiasm for learning and coming to school. My students love reading.
My Project
My students are visual learners. Telling a story using puppets helps keep my students engaged. We can discuss how the character is feeling and make connections to the character.
These books and puppets and blocks will help children become better at identifying their feelings and what they can do when they are upset.
Children need to be taught these basic skills. When children are entering school they do not have the social skills to get along with one another. These puppets will allow my students to retell a story and work together to tell the story. Reading should be enjoyable. I want to create life long readers.
